In todays news I found an article claiming that Texas is loosening their laws. Despite the fact that there has been a spike in gun violence. Reporter Mandi Cai, of the Texas Tribune reports, “the University of Texas/Texas Tribune polls show that Texans are divided about gun control. Half wanting more strict laws for gun control here in Texas” (texastribune.com, 2019). Yet the laws still seem to be moving in the opposite direction.
Cai mentions that there has been seven mass shooting over a ten year span here in Texas. This raises major concern in safety for citizens here. Especially since almost half of Texas is licensed to carry. It is not unsettling that the law abiding citizens have the right to carry. What is unsettling is the fact that the very lenient laws here in Texas allows for guns to get into the wrong hands.
We have moved onto now implementing emergency plans in schools in case there is a shooting. This is awful that even our children are not safe when they are in school. This needs to stop immediately and that is why I fight for my bill. Legislative Bill H.R. 674 authorizing the CDC to conduct research on firearms safety or gun violence prevention (congress.gov, 2019).
Moving on I am getting incredibly nervous about getting a response back from my senator. I sent another letter to our second senator. Senator John Cornyn in hopes that one of the two will get back to me before this final assignment is due. I am starting to get a bit worried that I might had mailed it out much too late. I did google search an estimated time to get a response and it said 30 days but I don’t know how true that information is. I am going to start to have to look into some new ways to get involved.
