My chosen legislation bill authorizes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct or support research on firearms safety or gun violence prevention (Library of Congress). The legislation I am supporting went from being introduced by the House of Representatives to referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Then referred to the Subcommittee on Health and has not changed as of lately. Although I just read that a chief executive of 145 companies sent a letter to Senator Ted Cruz requesting his help in passing a law to curb gun violence (C. S. Monitor). According to Christian Science Monitor in an interview it was learned that Senator Ted Cruz rejected the letter. I am starting to understand our Senator’s stand on owning guns here in Texas. Which is why I’ve chosen the legislation on gun violence protection research.
I understand that people don’t want to give up their guns after obtaining them legally. Research can play a major role in assisting in coming up with an innovative way to fix this major issue. I did make a few changes to my legislative letter because I took the advice from my classmate Jeannette that I found was very helpful. I have yet to send my letter out because I wanted feedback from professor first. I have talked about the gun laws with a few relatives and new friends who are licensed to carry. To get a clear view from the people these laws are going to affect. I learned that this last shooter in El Paso Texas was denied a gun license previously and then went onto pass years later. I’ve heard talks about people selling guns at gun shows all the time to unlicensed customers. In certain states there is no law against this act.
